This figure originates from Chantilly in France and presents a man of Asian origin and a jar. It is made out of porcelain and depicts the theme of orientalism, commonly found on European ceramics. Such ceramics were part of the phenomenon of European fascination with the oriental and the "exotic", in particular with Asian cultures and attempts at recreating traditional Asian ceramics, usually for commercial purposes, although the purpose of this particular ceramic is unknown.
