Description

Chinese contract workers regularly protested against the onerous conditions in which they had to work. The colonial authorities labelled them as rebels and thugs. This photo taken in 1899 shows Li Hong and his supporter being taken as prisoners by Dutch colonial soldiers (KNIL). The soldiers had been tasked with suppressing the so-called Chinese uprising in Bangka.
