Subject

Surviving instances of Italian fascist architecture in Tianjin, China

Description

From 1901 to 1943, Italy administered a small territory in the city of Tianjin; this was, for all intents and purposes, Italian colonial territory in China. The Italian concession in Tianjin was instituted with the Boxer protocol in 1901 together with a number of other Western concessions in the same city. In September 1943 it was occupied by Japanese forces, which administered it de facto until 1947, when it was returned to the Chinese state through the Treaty of Paris between Italy and the Allied Powers. Traces of Italian presence in Tianjin are still visible today.
